Yesterday, we were surprised to find
two visitors prowling around our back door. (Insert your own prison metaphor
here if you would like.) I can only assume they have come from one of the
houses behind the store but we had two cats digging around in the consignment
store’s dumpster out back. Becca to one look at me and I knew I couldn’t say
no. Bringing them inside, it took them about two seconds to get acclimated.
They clearly were domesticated, these are not wild cats.
Thankfully, we have a supply of things
like food, kitty litter, litter boxes, flea collars, and an entire 4 foot
section of shelf space dedicated to pet toys. So, needless to say, they got
spoiled pretty quickly. Personally, I am a cat person so I am very happy to
have the company. Food and some of the closer dated milk was served up in
bowls. They ate like they hadn’t been fed in weeks and for all we know, that
could be true.
So, there is a calico female that
the girls gave the name Pumpkin. She must be the older of the two because once she
had a full belly and found a lap to curl up in, she was fast asleep. The second cat, a solid black female, was
quickly named Loki for her mischievous ways. She likes to run around the store
and pop out from around corners to claw your legs. She doesn’t draw blood or
anything. She just comes along and takes swipes at you.
Lance claims to hate them both and
has promised to skin and eat them but I have seen him on the security cameras
tossing Loki food and playing little cat and mouse games with her.
I am curious how they handle the night
and how they will handle things when it starts to get cold. I think Pumpkin
slept on Janet’s bunk last night. It would not be that hard to make little “cat
ladders” for them to climb up the top of the coolers where we sleep. Again,
something they can easily climb but nothing to compromise security.
I think these two cats are going to be
a welcome addition to the family. We have more than enough food and hopefully
they will serve well as mousers.
