Because of how we have our security
cameras set up, you tend to notice things happing around you at a pretty good
distance. And so it was one of the damnedest things when the 2013 Cadillac
Escalade came rolling through Langley with the sales sticker and stats still on
the window. (I mean if you are going to car jack in the Zombie Apocalypse, do
it in style.) But despite your upper echelon vehicle and the fancy hybrid
engine for gas mileage and a $78K price tag, that big ass SUV is only going to
go so far on two flat tires. Road debris flattened two of their tires and only
having one spare and zoms closing in on all sides, the crew had no choice but
to drive on.
Unfortunately, the tire whine and the
noise just drew more and more of the zoms out of the woodwork. They could drive
fast enough to stay out of danger but not fast enough to outpace it. So when
they turned down the service road, two passengers hanging out windows and
firing back at the zoms, we stepped in and gave them cover fire from the roof.
They pulled up to the scissor dock and nothing really had to be said. Asylum
was silently asked for. We didn’t really have time to debate.
Six people in total. Three men, three
women. A married couple, two strong young men and two very attractive females.
But the closer for the group was not the chick with big boobs (although that
gave them my vote). No, the closer was named Kilo. Now, before you think that
they bought their passage inside with drugs, it was actually quite the
opposite.
Before the arrival of “Group 3”, we were
split down the center as far as how we handle any refuges that might have come
calling. Tommy and Luke were very adamant and the most vocal about any extra
people could compromise our security and would cost us resources. But Janet and
Judy were just as adamant about not turning away those in need. In the end, the
deal closer came in the name of Kilo.
Kelsey looked the group up and down
and said quite forcefully, “Let them in. He’s a cop.” Since everyone was all in
street clothes, we all thought she was crazy until she said, “Not them… Him.”
And she pointed to the German shepherd in the back of the Escalade. He was
still wearing a badge around his collar.
So, for the record, anyone who is good
enough to be running game with a police dog is pretty much someone you want to
add to your resource pool. We got everyone inside and locked the doors back
tight. Kilo was quickly given a very big bowl full of very expensive dog food
and we handed out Gatorade to everyone.
Our newest arrivals have agreed to
remain in the quarantine zone for the next 48 hours. (See, it came in handy
after all.) I am less concerned about them being infected but this is more of a
vetting process to make sure this is someone we want in our crew. And since I
have no idea how far reaching this blog is, this survivor list is for any
family member that may respond to the emails that we sent out.
