Day 64 – June: A Month in Review

As June has now come and gone, I find myself with a certain level of certainty that we will be more than able to hold out for the coming year. I don’t want to come across as arrogant or overconfident. The sudden and dramatic death of Keith is a constant reminder for everyone how quickly anyone can be lost. However, I do feel that we are in a safe haven. We have plenty of food. Electricity is still on and we have access to emergency generators if and when the power goes down.
The arrival of “Group 2” really bolstered peopled spirits when it came to our morale. And I say that not just because Janet was reunited with her son, Kim was reunited with her brother, and Kasondra was reunited with her fiancé. Maybe there are others out there too.
I know you may feel out of the loop because I took that week to describe Zero Hour but I hope you understand – I hope I was able to properly convey – the level of panic and pandemonium that gripped everyone when this horrible outbreak started. I am fully aware of the miracle that we have all survived this thing.
I remember Audrey commenting one time about how she was so thankful and how she whispered thanks every day that she was here when the outbreak happened. She was in the right place at the right time and despite being separate from Lucas and her family, she knew that if she would have got caught unaware or out in the open when all this started, the odds are she would be dead (or undead) right now.
I know there are typically moments like this in all the horror movies where people look around and say, “This isn’t living. This is just waiting to die!” And then they decide to swim to the surface and while doing so at least half of the group is eaten mercilessly by the genetically engineered shark or squid or shark-squid that the now contrite and humbly repentant scientist created.
But look around us. We do have water, food, shelter and security. We have these things in abundance. Sure, we are lacking some of the creature comforts but we are enacting a plan today to change that for the better. And that plan I am pretty excited about. It is part of the reason why I am up in the four o’clock hour writing all this out.
It is going to be a big day. I am going to shut down and try to get a little more sleep before the morning reveille. We are looking to institute a few game changers. Sleep tight, everyone. Stay safe. And if you can get to us, please do but stay safe. No unnecessary risks. We aren’t going anywhere.
Talk to you soon.
