Day 44 – Midnight or Daylight?

Our group has had an interesting discussion as to when Brad and his crew should try to make the move to get here. On June 8th, the moon was completely blacked out. Should they move at night or in the daylight?
Daylight Move: You can see for a very long distance if zombies are coming. And the flip side of that coin is that they can see you as well. In theory, you should be able to move faster than them. But speed does nothing for you if you round a corner and there are fifty zoms shambling between you and the door you need to get through. Granted, our back pasture offers a pretty big kill zone so the odds of a shambling horde appearing suddenly are somewhat remote. But if a horde does come staggering though, at least you can see it coming and modify your plans as necessary.
Brad has signaled Kasondra that they will be coming via pickup truck. If the “landing zone” is too hot, they can simply head out the back way and try to come in at another time. With no cell phone service or radios, every minute you are out and exposed, you are in trouble. So we want them in here as quickly as possible.
Nighttime Move (New Moon): I don’t know when the last time was you went out at night when it is a new moon but you might as well stumble around with a blindfold on. Right now, there are still a few lights running on timers but there are no people to turn on porch lights. We could turn on the parking lot lights to help guide them in but that only announces our presence to every zombie within a mile radius. Aside from the moaning and the stench, how would you know how many zombies are out there staggering around? Yeah, you get the cover of darkness but so do they. And what if they have some sort of weird night time vision that they combine with smell and they use that to hunt you. Zoms are equally active during night and day. We cannot prove that they can see in the dark but we also cannot prove that they CANNOT see in the dark. And if they can see in the dark and we can’t, suddenly that advantage swing is swinging the wrong way.
Nighttime Move (Full Moon): The cover of darkness using moonlight does help mask your presence a little better. It does almost seem a little bit like the safer route, if you are only doing a burst distance. If you are moving quickly and know where you are going, in theory, you are moving with a purpose. You get the cover of darkness to cover you.
But I think personally, at the end of the day, speed is going to be that group’s biggest asset. If they kick out, guns blazing, I think they could be over here before any large contingent can zero in on them. And if that is the case, they can maximize a car’s speed in the bright light of day. So, daylight is probably the best option for them for now.
(By the way, why haven’t we heard gun shots from them if they have an arsenal over there?)
Regardless, they will make the move when they are ready. Right now, the tentative day is Wednesday. I really hope I get to post a good article to you guys that day. I really do…
