Day 39 – Zombiology 101: Prey for the Hunters

Zombies seem to react more on instinct then cognitive thought. It is like their brains are only running on emergency power. Not all the neurons are firing. They react instinctively and all they seem to do is hunt. They seem to have some natural instincts and have some sort of brain function. I watched one manage to fumble their way into a car by using a door handle but I have also seen one just bang randomly on windows. But I knew I guy in high school named Harley who they nicknamed “Hardly” because he was hardly smart enough to breathe.  Much like “Hardly,” I seriously doubt these things are going to be doing geometry on a scientific calculator. They do have some intelligence… just not a lot of it and I learned early in life not to underestimate the stupid. Do that and you might just find yourself facing an army of these things in your living room…
So! Zoms have degenerated down into some animal running on primal instinct and there is nothing more primal than the desire to feed. Ever seen those internet videos of dogs that are pretty darn clever when it comes to opening doors or traversing home obstacles to get that food left out on the counter. Meat is meat and they take the first or most available dish from the buffet. I think this is why we survived that first massive surge of the zombie attack. We buttoned up the store pretty damn fast. And there is a pretty good chance that other businesses were not as successful or unified in their purpose. If the convenience store next door or the bank across the way did not barricade their doors as quickly, zoms started flooding in and started chowing down.
Because of their herd mentality, if one zom is feasting and they let out that keen, others come running (kinda) to get some of that easy meat. Think of it like this. Zombie James caught sight of us and the open door in the back of the store. Shuffling after us, we slammed the door shut. He smeared his hands up against the steel door for a while but eventually it sunk into his mush mind that he is not getting in. He hears a keen from across the parking lot where two zoms caught a woman in her car at the Party Mart. That was certainly easier meat to get than trying to pound through that unforgiving steel door. So he shambled off. Half of it was because he lost all external stimuli of us (no sight, sound, etc.) and the other half is because there was a much easier target across the parking lot.
One zombie will not track you down if you drive away in a car. They will track you until they lose you off their radar and since they are not tremendously fast, most of the time, you can outrun them. The trick is just getting off that radar. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that when the easy meat starts to go away and they start to get hungry, they might not break off their attacks so easily. Time will tell…
Use this information as best you can in your attempt to survive… More soon.
