Day 36 – May: A Month in Review

As far as Zombie Apocalypse’s go (like I have been in so many of them), this one has been pretty good. Audrey was commenting on how she feels very blessed to be in the “right place at the right time” when the outbreak started and I have to agree with her.
I used to talk all the time about “frame of reference.” Compared to some people, my life is pretty pathetic. Compared to other people, I am living pretty well. To a corporate CEO or a Wall Street executive, my paltry $20K a year earnings would be laughed at. My 2003 Honda Civic is frowned upon by that dude driving the $90K Mercedes. And my little house in the country with the peeling paint and needing a new dishwasher would be considered a shanty.
But to the crack addict who has had her kids taken away from her by DHS and is living out of an income-based apartment might consider my place a palace. That guy riding the bus back and forth to work would love to have my car. So it all comes down to perspective.
Because right now, that corporate executive living in his mansion with undead servants chasing him around his billiard table while he throws $1,000 bottles of scotch at them, trying to knock them out, would probably love to have my level of security, food, weapons, and companionship.
Really, aside from an aircraft carrier, a submarine, or a large cruise ship in open water, I cannot think of a better place for us to be right now. Originating in a low populated area, we are not overrun with a mass outbreak from within a major metropolitan area. We have more food than we can eat. We are safe(r). In fact, we are so safe, we are working to get people is less supplied and less safer environments to us. So that is very nice.
I cannot remember how many square feet this store is. I want to say 70,000 but I am a really bad judge of such things. The open space of the store and the number of people that we have in here, we can spread out and separate fairly easy. So if you need to be alone, you can be. On more than one occasion, I have seen people in quiet corners. Some are writing in notepads. Others read. I mean, you can get away.
But the staple that we all live by is that we all eat together. Meals are important to the group and we use that time to talk, share ideas, make plans, and I also think this is where everyone is secretly keeping an eye on each other. Not in a paranoid delusion state or anything but just a way to make sure everyone is okay and no one is getting too low. A positive mental attitude is very important right now. We don’t want anyone to get too low, too depressed and think that it is all over. We have way too many pistols for things to take a nasty turn with something like that.
I mean, all things considered, I would say we are doing pretty well. Aside from having to put down that customer that was bitten on the hand, we haven’t lost anyone. Everyone seems to be in pretty good health and spirits. I think that if we can get Brad and his group over here to us, it will be a huge moral victory for everyone involved. And how are we going to do that?
I have no idea…
