Looking
back, I cannot believe how quickly July has flown by. Perhaps after being cooped
up for all of May and June, once we started making sortie runs, the days flew
by because we were more active. We had purpose. We had missions to accomplish.
Adding real life mattresses to the equation has helped tremendously. You don’t
realize the true value of good sleep until you are not having it.
The loss of Audrey hit everyone
hard. She was a beloved member of the group and her loss still stings. I just
have to hope that Alex learned from a mistake that cost her her life. I don’t
say that to speak ill of the dead or anything but the truth of the matter is
that if Audrey hadn’t broken ranks, she would still be with us. And I want Alex
to learn that lesson. I want him to pull a Maverick and grit behind his oxygen
mask, saying, “I am not leaving my wingman.”
But the arrival of “Group 3” has
rewarded us tremendously. It is heartbreaking to hear that Claremore and Tulsa
are gone but it is also uplifting to know that there are more pockets of
survivors than we expected out there. Maybe we have a chance after all… I think
the biggest thing about this new group – for Alex – is the addition of Kilo.
Pumpkin and Loki are not very happy about it but him and that dog have become
inseparable. It has done wonders for his spirits.
Somehow, the power is still on. Food
stores are high and we are still doing very well. Things like movie night and
communal games are keeping people in high spirits. We are doing quite well.
Now, as for the zombie population,
we think we have good news to report. Langley was a relatively small town
before all of this broke out in the first place. Reason’s was probably the
center of the commercial universe in Langley. From our location, we saw a lot
of businesses pop up all around us. Lots of businesses meant lots of people and
therefore the zoms rushed here for the lunch buffet and then they hung out way
past their welcome.
I am not saying that we are sitting
on thrones of ammo cases but we have a pretty nice supply of .22 bullets which
are more than enough to take out a staggering zom from the roof. When you are
killing a minimum of ten zombies a day, after 95 days, you start to run out of
targets to shoot at because Langley is not that populated.
There are always the stragglers and
the strays. And we are all full aware that we could experience an influx from
any hordes that could come shambling down the highway. But for now, we are
feeling safe.
Aside from the loss of Audrey, July
has been a very good month. My only qualm is that summer is clearly here and
the heat is really beginning to set in. Still, we need more months like this
one…
