Day 97 – Liquor in the Front, Poker in the Rear

This is such a brilliant idea I don’t know why we didn’t think of it earlier. Tonight, Kasondra set all these tables up and invited all everyone to play poker in a No-Limit Texas Hold’em Tournament. She had multiple tables, drinks, pretzels, popcorn, and sweets all set up. It was really cool. For those that didn’t know how to play, we had a bunch of practice hands. They say about Texas Hold’em is that it takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master. That is true because it is more about playing there person across from you than it is playing the cards.
Now, I know you may be thinking, “Okay, so they were trapped inside and played cards. What is so brilliant about that?” Well, are we just a Cynical Cy tonight? What made it truly brilliant were two things: Cash and the stakes.
Yep, instead of using chips, Kasondra had Janet raid all the cash that was in the safe and in the registers at the time of the outbreak. Now maybe it is just me and I am too small time but to sit down at a tournament holding $1,000 in cash is a pretty cool feeling.
The other catch was the stakes involved. See, if you are not playing for anything of real value, then people will play a lot looser than they normally would. They will hang around to chase that flush or that straight when really they should be folding. So we needed something of value that was worth playing for. But in our whole communal society where no one really has ownership of anything, it is tough to come by. Then the grand prize was announced.
The winner of the tournament got an extra night in the Luxury Bedroom with turndown service. Yep, guaranteed clean sheets, pillows fluffed, room spotless, and even those tasty Andes mints waiting for you on the pillow. You got use of the private TV and your choice of DVDs for the evening.
Now, THAT was something worth playing for.
Everyone loves that private bedroom. You get to sleep in a real bed with a nice comforter and all sorts of amenities. It gave people motivation to play straight and not just willy-nilly calls and raises.
Given that everyone had a good time, I think this is going to be a regular Saturday night thing. It provides a distraction. Winners get bragging rights. And it was something that everyone got in on, even those people who have never played the game before. We need more of these activities that involve everyone. I think it makes us tighter as a unit. And no one is going to complain about any lady being tighter. Am I right, men?
Okay, off to bed. Sleep well.
