Day 100 – FoS: Department Report – Video

Video Department in the Pastel Violet Color
I know we did an entry (and I had to go back and check) on July 24th about how we have a regular movie night. If you look on the highlighted field with the map I have attached, this area is the video department. It is a little hard to decipher but this whole department is lined with all sorts of shelving for the new releases. And then the rectangles you see there in the center are the shelves for older movies broken down into categories. Since movies are put out with the front facing you (so you can make your selection easier) and we have multiple copies of the new releases, condensing down this department was pretty darn easy. We shifted the entire stock of movies to the perimeter, stored away all the unnecessary multiple copies of the DVDs and stacked them all like books instead of displayed like video stores do it so you can see the front covers. The “general release” shelves were moved outside to barricade the back produce dock. Once all those interior shelves were removed, it actually opened up a pretty big space which is where we now all congregate together to watch movies as a group.
I would say that this area provides a pretty large source of entertainment for the group because of the conversions that we have done to the department itself. (All the hick rednecks that were afraid of that new-fangled Internet kept the video department in business.) Thankfully, the Video Department did a pretty big cosmetic upgrade last year. They put in two really nice flat screen TVs that we repositioned. One TV is now for watching movies and the other is for playing video games.
We didn't really bother to do a complete inventory but I know we have a couple thousand DVDs in the department. Even at two movies a night, we couldn't chew through the whole inventory in a year. The same goes for the large number of video games that the department had available for rental. With the DVD players, TVs, and even an XBox 360 on hand, there is plenty of stuff for people to do to relax. Luke and Alex orchestrate Madden tournaments. People can watch whatever movies they want but we all get together as a group to watch them too.
The theater-size boxes of candy are an added treat and those movie sessions are where we do most of our microwave popcorn. Being a big movie geek, this place is my cathedral. I am very happy that we have it as it provides and escape for everyone on a regular basis… I guess until the power goes out and then it just becomes another collection of doorstops to have. But until then, we are using to its full potential.
