Day 129 – Catch of the Day

Pensacola Dam as seen from the Langley side.
In between Langley and Disney is the Pensacola Dam. Spanning over a mile in length, this dam was built back in the 40s if I remember right and it is the reason why Grand Lake even exists. The Langley side entrance to the dam is about two miles from the store. It might be less. You are there in absolutely no time. It’s a hop, skip and a jump. Now, I know I just talked about us suspending the looting missions because of the loss of Dillon but what we are doing here is slightly different.
Using some pretty massive trucks and vehicles from around town, we decided to wall off the Disney side of the dam and barricaded the Langley side so that the majority of the highway running across is closed off but there is a small access area that we can get to by moving one car.
Because of how the dam is built, this gives our guys a pretty darn safe area that is over a mile long that they can fish from. If you remember, Hunter was out fishing on Grand Lake when Zero Hour occurred. This is a way for us to get fresh fish in a fairly secure manner. It is about as secure a method that we can think of.
The crew is close enough to still be in range by way of their walkie-talkies. We have snipers covering their return on the roof. They zip in an out by way of our motorcycles and ATVs. It is a pretty solid system. No one goes that doesn’t want to. No one is required to go. And with the fishing dropped to all but zero since the outbreak began, apparently fishing is pretty darn easy.
The crew has even talked about commandeering one of the many, many boats around the lake. I am not really crazy about that idea. There are far too many things to go wrong. Thankfully, the weather is starting to get cooler already and swimming doesn’t seem tremendously appealing at this point. But having docks overrun, running out of fuel, just all the cliché horror movie endings seems to be ripe for the picking if we decided to start tooling around the lake for pleasure…
Still, I know we are all happy to have the fresh fish. Lance is intent on bagging a deer for us to make venison with. Heck, we could probably figure out how to slaughter a cow if we wanted to but I don’t see how we could haul around that much dead weight. But it still seems like overkill. We still have plenty of food reserves but still, I think everyone can agree that fresh is better.
Now, I tell you all this because we have been eating the fish pulled from the waters for several weeks now. We still feel pretty solid that this virus has not spread to animals. You don’t see zombie fish swimming around or zombie cows staggering out in the fields. So if you can gain access to fresh foods, we believe you can eat them safely.
We are not going sushi with these guys. We are cooking everything thoroughly just to be extra careful. I am willing to bet that there are more than a few zoms within Grand Lake itself polluting the waters. But I am very sure that any fish that you catch is safe to eat. So, nom nom nom if you can. Eat up. You look thin.
More soon…
