Day 166 – The Logistics of Going Mobile

I was getting up this morning and I took a look around at the small niche that Alex and I have created for each other in our little corner of the store. We each have our own little alcove made from milk crates that are covered over with cardboard to give us some semblance of privacy. I have my own bed with two sets of linens that I get to alternate. I have two pillows. I ran an extension cord with a power strip so that at my bedside I can have a small lamp, an alarm clock and a charging station for my iPad. I blog and write my articles from my bed. Then, we have made cubby holes out of the milk crates, which allow me to store the multiple pairs of jeans, shirts, socks, underwear, and my two towels. It is not much. Pretty simplistic. But in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, I am a millionaire.
We are all surrounded by weapons, food, water, booze, and medicine. Right now, I cannot think of something aside from the most minor of luxuries that we do not have. I don’t think we are wanting for anything. But then as I look at everything that I have, if I wanted to take everything and move it, it would be pretty difficult. If you want to carry everything you own, even two sets of clothes can start to take up some serious space.
Now try to calculate in water. How much does a human being need to drink every day in order to survive? So put two gallons of water in a backpack. You cannot assume that supplies are going to be plentiful out there. How long would you have to travel to find good water? Are you planning on just looting food as you need it? Obviously, you are going to have to protect yourself. So that means bring along weapons. Weapons need ammunition… The sheer weight of items you would need to carry with you can be pretty daunting. I don’t see how that fellowship of nine in The Lord of the Rings ever made it out of Rivendell much less halfway to Mordor.
Trying to head out across the bleak landscape populated by undead cannibals almost seems like an impossible venture at this point. I guess that is why everyone agreed to the Year One Plan so quickly.
Just stuffing a few essentials in a backpack and hoofing it out with no real plan of attack is a real exercise in futility. But I suppose we do need to think about what we are going to do in an event that we have to leave. I guess I should approach that subject with the group just to see what ideas we can come up with. I think Brian is the best person to talk to because he has a head for these kinds of things.
Better to plan for it now and execute the plan slowly on our timeframe than having to bug out quickly and in a haphazard rush. Experts on all of those Doomsday Prep shows say you need a “bug out bag” with supplies for 72 hours. That seems like a good start. But Brian also mentioned something about the school buses out at Adair. I wonder what is plan is…
